The goal of this offering is to introduce girls to the sport of mountain biking. The focus will be on creating camaraderie for girls on bikes with the goal of promoting the physical and emotional benefits cycling has to offer. This course is designed to introduce students to the sport of mountain biking including the science and basic engineering of bike design, the history of the sport, sustainable trail design, and its impact on our local and regional economies and communities. The course approach combines group work, hand-on projects (trail building/maintenance and bike repair), and academic research. Students can expect to learn the basics of trail riding, bike maintenance, trail design, and the benefits that mountain biking brings to their personal health and community.
- All riders need to have basic riding skills such as shifting gears, braking, mounting/dismounting and riding over small obstacles such as roots.
- They will also need to have a fitness level to sustain a 2.5 hour activity and be able to ride or walk up steep hills.
- This course will allow for more frequent opportunities for breaks/rest.
- A proper fitting helmet, water bottle or hydration pack and snacks are required.
- A tuned mountain bike is recommended but not required (essential for rider safety).
